Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah is an American artist and rapper. In film, music and on television, Queen Latifah is the recipient of the award of two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award as well as six more Grammy nods and has been nominated for an Emmy Award. Queen Latifah is the daughter of Newark New Jersey native. Her parents were Lancelot Sr., a policeman and Rita, a teacher of Irvington High School. Her father and mother divorced at the time Latifah was ten years old. Latifah grew up in the Baptist faith and attended Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. Latifah is her name for stage before she turned eight. It means very fragile in Arabic. Always a tall girl at 5'10, Latifah was a forward on her basketball team in high school. She sang the song Home from The Wiz at a high-school play. Latifah was the first to begin beatboxing for Ladies Fresh. Latifah is one of the original participants of Flavor Unit, which was in the beginning a group composed of MCs led by DJ Mark the45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, recorded a version of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. The recording was given to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was intrigued by the song. The singer signed Latifah and dropped her debut single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
